Afzelia Xlay figure

(afzelia xylocarpa)

Afzelia wood can have incredible figure, and the most outstanding and rare is the xlay figure as seen above.  It looks like raised alligator skin, which really shows best when the surface is very highly polished.  No other wood figure looks quite like it, and it is very hard to get, being only a tiny percentage of the afzelia wood available.  Not difficult to work, and the pieces below are dried.  Note that the figure is normally wide on one side (the side you see pictured) and gets smaller on the other side. Sometimes the other side looks like tiny bubbles. Thinner pieces show more of the wide figure on both parallel sides.    The wood below is old rare stock. Supply very limited and with prices over currently over $600 per board foot for raw material (before the imperfections are cut out as with those we sell which adds about 20% more to the cost), we don't know if/when we can get more at a price that would allow us to offer it .

All are completely dry and ready for use. It took years of bartering and small transactions to put this little group together and then to get them dried, because good ones thicker than 1/2 inch are really tough to find. In general the figure is better than the photo. To get the best view, you would have to photograph each one seperately and hold it at the right angle. So this is my best effort to show them, in your hand they should look better. NOTES: L is a little log section that has light figure, at least to the depth we have gone sanding it. There could be more or less figure inside. When finishing this stuff, take it to the finest sanding you can, that really makes the figure pop better. This is all we have for now. Note: MISSING pieces below already sold .

No surprises: ALL four sides of visible in photos:

These are the actual pieces for sale. These are beyond rare, and I haven't seen them for sale anywhere else before. They were originally cut to be fingerboards for guitars, but could be used for many purposes, like laminating to archery bows, making larger turning blanks through laminating, or also using to make jewelry boxes. The wood just doesn't seem be on the market at all anymore, except for maybe pen blanks or very small turning blanks--which are also hard to find. If not listed below then that piece is sold. Notes: size variations from the listed size are possible, +/- 1/32 for thickness, +/- 1/16 for width.
