Borneo Rosewood
(melanorrhea usitata)

Borneo Rosewood  is an uncommon wood from Southeast Asia.  The density is high and many have found it to be an excellent turning wood.  These have a very nice deep red color. Rare on the market now.

Borneo Rosewood pen 3/4

Click the photo above for a view of the other two sides.
There is no deeper and more vibrant red wood then Borneo rosewood, including bloodwood. Borneo rosewood has a finer grain with less noticeable pores than bloodwood in most cases. These pieces have been finished with a clear finish which makes the red look more bold and bright. If you wax or oil them, the red will become far deeper (see next group below which have a thin wax coating). These pieces have been drying for about 2.5 years and are completely dry. All are perfect pieces with surfaces already straightened on a jointer. Borneo rosewood is now rare on the market, and flawless dry pieces like these are virtually unknown. Take a polish like glass!

NOTES: These are all dry. They have been finished with a thin layer of anchorseal wax (can be taken off with a paper towel usually). You can see how wax (or oil too) makes the wood look darker and deeper red. Compare them to the ones number 1 to 6 above, you can see the difference. Also, numbers 14,15,16 look darker because more wax was allowed to soak into the surface. You can get this same effect by soaking in more oil to the sanded wood and turning it this cranberry color. Piece 12 has some beautiful yellow markings which are not sapwood.

All pieces (section above and this one) were quite similar before finishing, but you can see how the choice of finish has a big effect on your final resulting red tones.
