Hard to find types that grow in Hawaii. The Nepal alder has the natural markings, plus figure and spalting (no soft areas found). The alder is extremely easy to sand and polish too. The Lychee has a lot of figure. Took a number of years to dry the lychee, it is very difficult to dry without causing checks as it is extremely dense. Not that hard to sand though. Note that dense wood does not necessarily mean it is hard to sand. Seems to depend on grain structure more than density.
