Piquia Marfim ( pronounced PEE-QUEE-YUH MAR-FEEM) is a very rare veneer wood from Brazil which is no longer available. It polishes like a dream . This is not related to yellowheart, but it is in the same family as peroba rosa. The grain of this wood is ultra fine, almost as fine as real boxwood (see comparison photo) and it looks very much like boxwood overall except it is more yellow and has quite a shine to it when sanded. It also costs less than half as much as boxwood though this wood is rarer. I haven’t seen any for sale on the market in about 10 years. Apparently it is no longer available and we only have a few pieces, when we sell out we cannot get more. It was used as a premium veneer wood years ago. Once it ran out yellowheart became the wood of choice, but now yellowheart also is leaving the market.
A great turning knife handle wood, or also great for any fine details.
Note that piece F did have a tiny check filled with superglue. It is visible in a closeup in the last photo.
