Bloodwood

Bloodwood can be the reddest wood out there without resorting to a bottle of dye. It has a pleasant smell when turned and is very dense. The specific gravity can vary from .7 to 1.0. The wood we sell tends to be on the higher end of density in the dark colors. It is native to Brazil and other areas in South America. When sanding, be careful not to overheat the piece or cracks could result. If a tiny check appears, we immediately fill it with superglue, and there is no visual evidence of the check afterwards. Photo above is of PRIMO grade. Note that when we say “air dried” or “kiln-dried” we mean that the wood has been properly checked with a corrected moisture meter and is known to have less than 12% moisture. 12% moisture is what used to qualify as a kiln-dried piece of wood in the past. Unfortunately, many vendors have started using using up to 18% moisture (which is unstable) to count as kiln-dried and completely wet wood to count as air dried. We don’t make claims of “air dried” or “kiln-dried” unless we know the actual moisture and it is genuinely under 12%.

Bloodwood PRIMO PLUS pen blanks

These are a really rare ultra deep red with fine grain that represent the best bloodwood we've had in 20+ years. You'll find that the density is heavier which actually allows finer detail if you want it. This is probably a one time thing, we have gotten bloodwood again since this time but virtually none are like these. We got these in 2021 and slow dried them til now.

Bloodwood M to T

Excellent pieces of bloodwood dried for almost 3 years. We got these in August 2021 and have been slow drying them ever since. It makes a huge difference to dry bloodwood correctly. You cannot rush this wood type (unless you are a wizard with a vacuum kiln) otherwise you have to wait. Most sellers would never do this for you, you just get handed a wet, waxed piece which may have hidden cracks and rot. These were really nice but we rejected lots of them that you'll never see since they had hidden cracks under the wax when we got them in. Even dry bloodwood can be cracked by wrong handling so always use extra caution with storage and working in bloodwood. Avoid excess heat in sanding as that is the number one cause of cracks, other than leaving them out exposed in dry or warm areas which also causes issues.

Bloodwood AtoL

Dried pieces in a very special bloodwood. We have been in business since 2003. The best bloodwood we have ever had is this. The color, density, fineness of grain, this has it all and I didn't think I'd ever see this. We had something almost as good that ran out around 2010 when cutting in a certain part of Brazil was stopped. This seems to have all come from the same extraordinary log. I did see a picture of the log but I don't have copyright so cannot show it here. It was very large, over 3 feet around and had the deepest cranberry red color I have seen, just as these do. It has taken years to dry these, you cannot rush high density bloodwood. They are 8-12% moisture content now. In some cases you may need them drier. If so, let me know as I know the best way to dry. Even being this dry, they cannot just be left out in the sun or in extreme dry or heat, be careful with them in that kind of environment.

HOW WE GET TOP QUALITY:Bloodwood comes in a variety of shades from brownish to cranberry red (pictured here). Because of the fact that most bloodwood isn’t as dark as it used to be, we are seperating wood into two categories of medium dark to darker reds= (PRIMO) and medium or brighter reds= (SELECT). Our bloodwood is kiln-dried in the 1″ thickness. Pieces above 1″ thick are partially air dried and cut very cleanly with no checks or cracks, unless specifically noted as dried. We have found that over 1.5″ bloodwood cannot be kiln-dried without checks appearing on the inside of the wood. This is why we have switched to non-kiln dried wood in pieces above 1″, but pieces on this page are usually sold dried. Each piece is high quality and has color according to the new grading system.
