Pen Blanks

Borneo Rosewood 28-39

Borneo Rosewood is a rare type of red colored wood from the island of Borneo and also Southeast Asia (Thailand, etc). It is considered the best wood to keep a red color over a long period of time. The wood is quite dense and polishes very well. The darker pieces turn a sort of cranberry red over time. The pieces that are more orange turn a red color over time. Note that the pictures shown pieces that are recently cut, they have not had time to turn to a deeper shade yet. It does not tend to turn brown, making it quite unusual. This is not a genuine rosewood (which all have a latin name starting with "dalbergia") and for that reason it is allowed to be shipped worldwide.

African Blackwood AtoH

African Blackwood, a genuine rosewood, is well known for millenia and is likely what the Ancient Egyptians called "ebony". It has a very fine grain, takes a glass like polish and is well suited for ornamental turnery, woodwinds, and anything that involves fine detail. It cannot be shipped outside the USA due to international trade restrictions on all genuine rosewoods.

Brazilian Kingwood

This is Brazilian Kingwood. It is a genuine rosewood and becoming rare in quality pieces like these. Last time imported was about 5 years ago, but that was just a very small amount and before that it was many years prior for the last time allowed out of Brazil. We hope it will be allowed out of Brazil again, but the current situation is that we will likely run out in the near future.

Brazilian Tulipwood 1to9

Dried Brazilian Tulipwood with selected best color. This wood is gone or nearly gone from the market (and our shop). We don't know if anyone will be able to import more or not, Brazil stopped exports around 2014 and has allowed no more out since then. Brazil currenly has a plan to ban all wood exports after 2028. But actions in the country make it unclear if they'll do that. If they do implement this it would mean the following woods would not be available: Bloodwood, canarywood (for the most part), Purpleheart (for the most part) and many more. NOTE: we cannot send this wood outside the USA due to strict CITES regulations.

Cocobolo 50to60

Real Cocobolo Rosewood. Fortunately this wood is being brought into the country in small regulated batches. Most other rosewoods are gone from the market, so it is really nice to still have a way to get these. They are dried pieces. We prefer selling dried pieces since the wet waxed ones pretty much everyone else sells have hidden cracks in them. We dry them, then cut off the ends to make sure they aren't cracked. Sometimes we have to kick out defective ones, but better done in our shop then giving you a bad surprise. Cocobolo is an oily wood, like most rosewoods. If finishing with a clear finish it is a good idea to wipe down the sanded surface with denatured alcohol, let the alcohol dry and then apply the finish. This removes the oil from the surface which can prevent finishes from adhering well. Shellac is also a good option as it seems to stick to most anything.
