African Blackwood 8to11

African Blackwood is a genuine rosewood and has been highly prized for thousands of years. It is used in musical instrument uses, but is really exquisite for use in all kinds of craft work because the wood finishes great and is a joy to work with. Being a genuine rosewood, supplies are severely limited by a permit program and it is now hard to get.

Very high grade, high density amboyna burl with great figure. Some of these are GG+ grade with figure everywhere. Dried pieces.

Black Ebony 402to409

High quality pieces in black Ebony. Dried wood. They couldn't be much more different than the pieces most companies sell: waxed , wet and often have bad areas you cannot see in photos. You can see everything in our photos, pieces are shown without a finish. To get an idea how much difference our cutting/selection makes with ebony, look at a piece like 403 or 404. That is often the entire yield of a piece that started out as a waxed 1.5 x 1.5 x 12. About 1 in 30 or less (3-4%) of the waxed 1.5 x 1.5 x 12's will turn into a cleaned up (dried too) piece that is 12" long and close to 1.5" square that is nearly black. We honestly cut away all the defects so you have a great piece every time. See the finish on the tops for idea of final color when finished. Note that we may need to spray your piece with a clear finish before it is shipped to protect it.

Bloodwood 39to49

High quality primo color bloodwood. Slow dried over time to give you a high quality piece. These are good for many uses. We classify pieces as knife blanks when they are a shaped in a way that is good for knife handles. It is also good for many other purposes.

Bloodwood 7to16

Dried bloodwood in ultra rare PRIMO PLUS grade. Bloodwood grades of primo are way above average for bloodwood and have a nice saturated red color. Note that we do our best with photos but we really cannot show how nice these are. Primo Plus is a new grade we had to add to explain the quality of this limited supply of deeper red , usually higher density and finer grained bloodwood. The extra care we take: bloodwood bought already dried is important because bloodwood over 1.25 inches thick is really quite difficult to dry and cannot be forced. Kiln drying sometimes works but usually just ends up ruining all the wood. We make sure any pieces over 1" thick are dried very gently in a multi step process that can take years. Even this means we lose about 1/3 of the wood due to cracking, but we wait for any cracks to form and then cut them out before we send the wood.

Bois de Rose 1to10

Bois de Rose, probably the most sought after rosewood in the world. The beauty, smell and workability is incredible, and the musical resonance is renowned. We have very little of this wood and there is no way to get more. It cannot legally be imported or cut, for many years. No new trees are cut as a result of you buying this wood.

Borneo Rosewood 1-7

Borneo Rosewood is a rare type of red colored wood from the island of Borneo and also Southeast Asia (Thailand, etc). It is considered the best wood to keep a red color over a long period of time. The wood is quite dense and polishes very well. The darker pieces turn a sort of cranberry red over time. The pieces that are more orange turn a red color over time. Note that the pictures shown pieces that are recently cut, they have not had time to turn to a deeper shade yet. It does not tend to turn brown, making it quite unusual. This is not a genuine rosewood (which all have a latin name starting with "dalbergia") and for that reason it is allowed to be shipped worldwide.

Borneo Rosewood 200to207

Borneo Rosewood is a deep red wood that tends to hold the red color over time. In fact it sometimes deepens to cranberry red but so far in the last decade I haven't seen one turn brown, just deeper red. These pieces were carefully dried, and drying takes quite awhile under controlled conditions. The wood is quite dense and is also considered rare. We label things as "knife blanks" when they are not squares in most cases. We don't have much of this wood left, so we hope everyone can enjoy it while it is still here. It comes from Laos mostly, where there are a lot of restrictions on wood exports.
