Madagascar Ebony 71-79
Pieces are shown bare wood, partially sanded in the pictures below. This is what other vendors don't show you. Madagascar Ebony, Diospyros perreiri, is considered to be the one of best types of ebony in existence. The grain is incredibly fine, and sanding is a dream. Specific gravity well over 1.0. and weighs about 67 pounds a cubic foot dried. All are dried with a moisture level between 9 and 11% By far the best type of ebony you can buy, but it is rarely seen on the market at all anymore and I have never seen it sold like this where the buyer can see the bare wood and real color before buying.

Masur Birch 22-34
If a piece shows two figure grades ie: 3A/4A it means that it is in between those grades and the first grade listed is closer to correct. Masur Birch is a highly desired patterned wood from Finland and Belarus mostly. Recent research (2017) has reversed the previous belief that these patterns are caused by beetle attack. Studies have shown that the trees that have these patterns are genetically different from those that don't have patterns. This is a process of natural growth in the tree rather then a response to insect attack. The quality of patterns in these pieces is far above average and required very selective cutting techniques to get this kind of appearance. Notes: There may be a long-term problem getting more, the source country Belarus is in a political crisis.

Pernambuco 1-8
Real pernambuco is basically gone from the market for many years, it is uncommon to see a piece for sale. Note this is not the same thing as chakte viga, sold further down this page. They are related but pernambuco is the rare one. You can darken the color by putting in direct sunlight and then remove once it is almost as dark as you want. Sometimes this can take only 3 hours, so watch the piece while "tanning" it.

Peroba Rosa 25-37
Peroba rosa, especially in dried pieces is rarely seen for sale. It is one of my favorite woods, ultra fine grain, finishes like a dream, works great on the lathe, takes detail, kind of like a hidden treasure most people in the wood world have passed over.
piece 33
1 13/16 x 5 7/8 x 8 inches
Piece 35
1 9/16 x 1 9/16 x 5 1/8 inches
Piece 37

Peroba Rosa A-N
This Peroba Rosa is doubly special: It is from the thick door jambs of a house built in Brazil in the 1860's. It is also what we call "Flamed" for the wild patterns here. The door jambs were badly cracked with nails and screws in them. We removed all the metal and then cut around all the cracks to produce these.
