Amboyna Burl 810-816

Amboyna Burl pen blanks. All were cut from the same slab so have compatible color/figure. All are GG+ grade. SIZES: 3/4 x 3/4 x 5 1/8 to 5.5 inches long. The ones on the left are shorter and the ones on the right are longer.

Amboyna Burl 817-820

Amboyna Burl Pen blanks. All are 13/16 x 13/16 x 6 inches, and all are GG+ grade. Except for 821, all of these were cut from the same slab. Exceptional quality.

Black Locust Burl pen blanks

Black Locust is a wood that grows in North America and is so durable it is used for fence posts with an expected life of 40 years in wet ground. A long time ago I lived in rainy, humid Southern Maryland and the best fence posts were locust. Pressure treated posts do not last as long. These are really high quality burl. GG+ means there is very high figure visible on all 4 sides, rare. GG means there is high figure on at least 2 parallel sides, but these have figure on 4 sides. It is hard to get this burl with a burl figure this fine and high grade, making them really perfect for pen blanks. Some finishes make them look darker, especially those that soak into the surface.

Afzelia Burl A-E

Super hard to find in this quality and dry, virtually gone from the market. Becoming a restricted wood as far as the ones from Africa go, these are from Thailand though.

These pieces are completely dried. Super hard to find in this quality and dry, virtually gone from the market.

Briar Burl AtoH

Briar Burl is a special wood usually used for making smoking pipes. It also turns out to be a great wood for woodworking too. Very easy to sand even though it is hard and the results are great. This is a very difficult wood to produce, the burls are odd small shapes with holes cracks and stones in the them. This is why you almost never see high quality blanks for sale, just the burls. The labor is prohibitive, but we like to make some for our customers from time to time because they are really interesting. Note: Prices actually went down from the last time we offered these years ago, we just got a better yeild this time!
