Masur Birch 60-68

Very high quality pieces of figured masur birch. These are what we call 4A. 4A means there are all four sides that have very good figure. 3A means at least 3 sides, etc.

Masur Birch 69to76

Very nice pieces of figured masur birch. These are 3A, meaning at least 3 sides have good figure but sometimes there is a 4th side that is almost fully figure too.

Mixed Burls, 1 to 13

Three burl types, all uncommon in turning blanks. The Kelat burl is very rare on the market, I can find no other current seller. The Mesquite burl it is not rare but hard to find good pieces because Mesquite burls are really small and have large holes in them. Making turning blanks, including pen blanks is not really feasible as they cost more to make then the selling price. Fun to offer though. For the Velvet Tamarind Burl, this is a very rare burl from Laos, and I can find very little else for sale. Ours have the added advantage of me spending hours in multiple sessions gluing the outside, as the burl is full of little slits and cavities. No doubt there are many places inside where my glue could not reach. So plan to glue these more once you get into them, but I did all that could be done from the outside to give you a big head start.

Gmelia Burl

Some unusual burls for one time sale. NOTES: The American elm burl has been soaked in superglue which was then sanded off multiple times. You likely will have to glue it more on the inside but we really worked all the glue in we could from the outside. These were so extraordinary for elm I decided to put a couple hours+ additional work into them just to make them nice. We have no more elm like these, nor have I seen any for sale. The Gmelia burl is the last piece we have in the shop, and it is a very nice solid and pretty piece.

Masur Birch 22-34

If a piece shows two figure grades ie: 3A/4A it means that it is in between those grades and the first grade listed is closer to correct. Masur Birch is a highly desired patterned wood from Finland and Belarus mostly. Recent research (2017) has reversed the previous belief that these patterns are caused by beetle attack. Studies have shown that the trees that have these patterns are genetically different from those that don't have patterns. This is a process of natural growth in the tree rather then a response to insect attack. The quality of patterns in these pieces is far above average and required very selective cutting techniques to get this kind of appearance. Notes: There may be a long-term problem getting more, the source country Belarus is in a political crisis.

Masur Birch 48-49

Pyinma 1.5 x 1.5 x 12's 1-10

Pyinma, also called Asian Curly Satinwood is an uncommon wood from Laos and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. It does have a satiny feel and polishes like glass. New supplies are not possible since about 2016 when Laos banned nearly all wood exports. We have kept them from many years ago and offer them now at a competitive price. Check prices elsewhere, these are substantially less than market price. ALL pieces ARE 1.5 x 1.5 x 12 inches

Koa L to R

Koa is now a rare wood. Pieces of Hawaiian Koa with figure like this are very hard to find for sale anywhere. These are all thin slices and might be a little thicker on one side than the other. The measurements show the smallest thickness area. We have had these for years, and there is no way we can get more stock of the quality you see in most of the pieces shown.
