Madagascar Ebony pen blanks

This is the premier type of ebony that can be bought. The grain is finer, the density is higher and in the case of AA or even AAA it is blacker than other ebonies almost always. We are offering these pen blanks we have slowly collected over the years of cutting this wood. I haven't seen pen blanks for sale in this ebony type, but we wanted to offer them to our pen blanks customers. Prices would actually work out to more like $20 each for AA grade, but we lowered them to keep them in a reachable range for these. Restricted to USA shipping addresses only.

Masur Birch 60-68

Very high quality pieces of figured masur birch. These are what we call 4A. 4A means there are all four sides that have very good figure. 3A means at least 3 sides, etc.

Masur Birch 69to76

Very nice pieces of figured masur birch. These are 3A, meaning at least 3 sides have good figure but sometimes there is a 4th side that is almost fully figure too.

Masur Birch 22-34

If a piece shows two figure grades ie: 3A/4A it means that it is in between those grades and the first grade listed is closer to correct. Masur Birch is a highly desired patterned wood from Finland and Belarus mostly. Recent research (2017) has reversed the previous belief that these patterns are caused by beetle attack. Studies have shown that the trees that have these patterns are genetically different from those that don't have patterns. This is a process of natural growth in the tree rather then a response to insect attack. The quality of patterns in these pieces is far above average and required very selective cutting techniques to get this kind of appearance. Notes: There may be a long-term problem getting more, the source country Belarus is in a political crisis.

Mun Ebony AtoD

Mun Ebony, (Diospyros Mun) is one of the many real ebonies. It grows in Southeast Asia, in this case Indonesia. It take a fantastic polish and can be very dark, but the ones that are green such as these are the best. It is a rare wood with very little availability on the market.

Nepal Sandalwood A to i

Nepal Sandalwood (osyris wightiana) is related to other sandalwood types. It has been used to mix into sandalwood essential oil since the 1800's. The smell is not as obvious as high grade Indian sandalwood or the the Hawaii Sandalwood types. It usually requires heating to be smelled and the aroma is more mellow than other sandalwood. Generally the lighter the color and the more burl in a piece the more smell it has. Reddish pieces usually have less smell, no idea why (however the color makes up for that!). This super rare material was imported around 2006 and as far as I can tell, not again since then. We don't have much left but wanted to put a rare offering together with these. They mostly have small natural splits, divets and some holes. We worked extensively on each piece that get those natural areas filled and glued with superglue. Expect some more gluing to be needed inside in some cases if you want to have a smooth surface as shown in the pics. It is a dream to work and has a unique beautiful look.
