New Woods

Snakewood H to Q

These are “micro boards” —basically useful little boards for many purposes. Each one has been carefully looked at, and quality is very good. There is less problems with checking when using thin pieces like this, they are more stable and tend to not split as easy as thicker pieces. Thoroughly dried over a decade.

Note that all snakewood, or nearly all has some small checks in it or will develop them. We do not guarantee you will not find checks inside, in fact we almost guarantee you will! It is the nature of this wood type and you should always be ready with a thin superglue applicator when working it. (if you catch them right away they are usually invisible after finishing) Avoid heat of sanding/boring as that is the cause of most cracks.

All the snakewood we sell was dried many , many years ago. It is as ready to use as it can be. Not for those without experience in working difficult woods.

The prices shown are the same prices we charged over 14 years ago. This is just an effort to recoup some of the losses, rather than to make money. We do not buy snakewood logs currently as there is no way to actually do that and process them into flawless pieces with figure and get anything but much less than we paid for them.

Olivewood Burl 119 to 129

Olivewood burl pen blanks. Most have been soaked with superglue that was dried and then sanded back off. Expect at least some of these blanks to need at least a little glue on the inside as the nature of most burls (including this one) is that you often find some kind of divet or slit inside that is usually in need of thin superglue. All have been well dried, an uncommon offering for sure.

Olivewood Burl 114 to 118

This is real Olivewood burl. Took since 2009 to dry it by a very slow method. Amazingly, some of it still isn’t dry and we’ll offer those few pieces in the future. It tends to crack when drying. Expect to use suerglue to fill some little gaps or issues inside the burl. We thoroughly glued the outside and sanded off any excess. It is a stable wood once dry though.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Olivewood+Almond 106 to 113

This is very nice dried olivewood with excellent lines and some have figure in places also. The Almond wood has the unusual appearance because it is cut along the hybridized line between the part of the root stock that is used and the hybrid tree that is grafted on top. Both types are dry, and the thick ones took about 10 years to slow dry as rushing them would have caused damage.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Olivewood 100 to 105

These are dried olivewood. Really nice grain and colors in these. This stuff is so easy to work with, it is really satisfying to sand and shape.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Pink Ivory 400 to 405

Pink ivory, dried, with fantastic color. Rare to find some of these colors in pieces that are actually dried and good quality. Note that piece 400 might have a tiny check or two somewhere, it was a crotch piece so they can be hidden inside especially. However quality appears very good on outside inspection. Others seem to be defect free based on my inspection.

Lignum Vitae Bowl Blanks

This is a rare offering of genuine lignum vitae bowl blanks in very good quality. All are dried, many years ago. They are rated as A grade instead of AA because I honestly cannot do a total inspection on the bigger ones due to wax. So I downgraded them But: What I can see looks very good, so if there are any defects I would expect them to be minimal.

I haven’t seen a genuine lignum vitae bowl blank such as #39 (in good condition like this) for sale in years.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Lignum Vitae 34 to 38

Very high quality pieces in genuine lignum vitae. These are AA (bearing) grade and really nice pieces.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Lignum Vitae 28 to 33

Genuine Lignum Vitae. Rare and not imported in many years. These are pieces that have contrasting wood colors. We basically just charge for the dark heartwood in these but we left the light wood on to add interest to these. All our lignum vitae has been dried a long time. All these pieces were first brought into our shop about 17 years ago.

SKU N/A Wood Name: Wood Type:
Lignum Vitae 22 to 27

Genuine lignum vitae in AA grade. The pieces are all AA grade in this offering, which means that we either removed any defects or could find none. AA is not a guarantee of absolute perfection, but it is equal or better to what others usually call “bearing grade” . This is a rare wood, almost never seen on the market. Heavy import restrictions seem to have prevented all new imports for many years (10+).
